Designing a “Shoot and Copy” Method for Mobile Devices and Large Displays

The Fluidum project investigates interaction with different types of information in instrumented environments. The instrumented room in the basement of Amalienstraße 17 is equipped with several displays such as a large display wall, an interactive table and a steerable projector. Storing or sending digital information displayed on those screens is currently not supported as these screens do not have textual input opportunities. Thus, new storing possibilities should be investigated.
One idea is to capture an image with a camera phone (like the Nokia 6600). This image can then be sent to the computer displaying content on a large display. By using image processing methods, the system should be able to determine the region of the display that has been captured. For example, this could be a part of a text document. After that, the system can store the copied text in a clipboard as well as a reference on the mobile device.
Once the reference has been stored on the mobile device, the user can obtain a notice whenever s/he is close to a computer by using Bluetooth, for example. Another opportunity would be to select a region on another display (with the technique mentioned above) and paste the stored content in it. With this technique it should be possible to paste documents on another desktop as well as paste stored text into another document.
For a project thesis, the student is expected to store references on the mobile device within one specific scenario such as the capture of an icon on the desktop. For a diploma thesis, s/he should use a more generic approach to the problem that also allows copying parts of a document (e.g. a paragraph of text from a large document).
